How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the lip straight on like a straight air, with the board flat (leaning to neither the toe edge nor the heel edge).

As you cross the lip, extend both ankles and both knees at the same time to pop straight up, keep your upper body tall instead of leaning forward, and look ahead to the landing. Leaning forward pushes your body forward and adds unwanted spin, so leave the lip straight.

  2. Once airborne, pull both knees up toward your chest.

Think of folding the legs back in right after the pop extended them, bending deeply at the hips and knees to lift the board close to your body. Raising the board to your hand is faster and more reliable than reaching your hand down to the board.

  3. Bring your rear hand (right hand for regular, left hand for goofy) down toward the toe edge.

Use the rear hand because grabbing with the front hand opens the leading shoulder and tends to start you spinning. Spread the front hand out to the opposite side to balance.

  4. Grab the toe edge exactly midway between the front and rear bindings, wrapping the edge with your whole hand.

Tilting the rear-hand shoulder about 15 degrees toward the board shortens the reach and makes it easier to get there.

  5. Hold the grab for a beat, then let go and ease the lifted knees out, extending the legs back down for the landing.

Keep your eyes on the landing and meet the snow straight on with a flat board.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Fold the lifted knees deeper than 90 degrees. If the bend is shallow the board stays far from your body and your fingers won't reach the edge even with the arm extended.

COMMON MISTAKE

Your fingers miss the edge even with the arm extended → the knees stayed straight so the board is far from your body → fold both knees to your chest first to bring the board in, then drop the hand.
