How to

Step by step
  1. Off the lip, press evenly through both your front and back feet and pop straight up to get height first.

A behind-the-body grab takes time, so the air you create directly buys you the chance to complete it.

  2. Once you leave the lip and float, bend your back knee slightly to lift the tail and bend your front knee deeply to draw it toward your chest.

Fold the board up in front of and below you, centered on the back-foot side, bringing it toward where your hand will reach.

  3. At the same time, send your back shoulder (right shoulder for a regular rider) toward your spine and twist your upper body slightly relative to your direction of travel.

Don't reach far with the arm. Let the shoulder twist carry your back hand into the path behind your body.

  4. With your back hand (right hand for regular), grab the heel edge of your back foot (the heel side, opposite your toes, around the midpoint between the bindings).

Rather than moving your hand to the board, bring the tucked-up board to meet your hand.

  5. Keep your eyes forward (your direction of travel) and hold for a beat.

Once past the peak, release, extend both knees, flatten the board, and set up to land. Keeping your eyes forward stops your torso from pitching forward and keeps you stable.

Tips

You can't reach the back heel edge by extending the arm forward. Sending your back shoulder toward your spine and twisting the upper body slightly swings the hand naturally behind you and shortens the distance to the heel edge.

COMMON MISTAKE

The back hand never reaches the board → you're reaching back with the arm alone while your shoulders stay square to the front. → Send the back shoulder toward your spine to twist the upper body, and let that rotation carry the hand around.
