How to

Step by step
  1. Approach exactly as you would for a straight air.

Bend both knees slightly, keep your weight centered over the board, and look at the lip (the direction you'll launch). A shifty is built on a stable jump first, so don't change your takeoff.

  2. Pop off the lip, extending both legs as if rising straight up.

Keep your shoulder line and both arms pointed in your direction of travel. Holding the upper body still is what lets the lower body twist on its own later.

  3. Right after you leave the lip, twist only from the belly button down.

To shift toward the toe (toes) side, draw both hips inward and swing the nose out toward your toes; to shift toward the heel (heels) side, open both hips outward and swing the nose out toward your heels. Turning from the hip joints rather than the knees keeps sideways stress off your knees.

  4. Hold the board angled across your direction of travel.

Start around 30 degrees, then build to 60-90 once it feels natural. A shifty is that brief moment where the upper body still faces forward while the lower body sits at an angle.

  5. Once you pass the peak of the jump, unwind those hips and bring the board back straight along your line.

Start the unwind before you begin dropping; if you're late, the board lands at an angle and catches.

  6. Glancing down to confirm the board is straight again, bend both knees to absorb the landing.

Keep your weight centered on the board and shift your eyes to where you're heading next.

Tips

Locking the shoulders and arms forward gives you a still upper body to twist against. The more the top stays put, the more clearly only the lower body appears to twist.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing with the board still angled and getting pitched forward -> you start the unwind too late after the peak -> begin bringing the hips back just before you start dropping. Treat it as one beat: twist, then unwind right away.
