How to

Step by step
  1. Lock in a stable straight jump where you land cleanly first.

Without a base where moving your hands in the air doesn't wreck your posture, you'll get spun the moment you reach for the grab.

  2. Point the board straight at the lip (the last edge of the takeoff) and pop evenly off both feet, straight up.

Room to grab comes from height, so go straight up rather than drifting sideways.

  3. Right after takeoff, fold your hips and knees to pull both knees up toward your chest.

Don't drop your hand to the board, lift your knees so the board comes up to your hand. This keeps your upper body steady and your eyes level.

  4. Grab the target spot on the lifted board.

For Mute, grab the toe side of your front foot with your front hand; for Melon, grab the heel side of your front foot with your front hand. If it's your first try, Indy, grabbing the toe side of your rear foot with your rear hand, is the easiest to reach.

  5. While grabbing, keep your eyes on the slope ahead and your head up.

Looking at the board drops your head, and that weight pulls your upper body forward.

  6. Release the grab one beat before landing, soften both knees, and let your back settle onto the airmat.

The mat absorbs the impact, so you can focus on holding the grab longer in the air.

Tips

Think "lift the knees to bring the board to your hand," not "reach the hand to the board." Reaching out stretches your body tall and makes you spin; tucking the knees compacts you, so you stay balanced with the same pop.

COMMON MISTAKE

Hand can't reach the board → Knees aren't pulled up enough, so the board stays far away. Use your abs to pull both knees to your chest and lift the board up to your hand.
