How to

Step by step
  1. Try this only after your straight WJ jump (fly straight, land on both feet) is solid.

Building the feel for staying level in the air first means you won't get thrown off when one hand reaches to the side for the grab.

  2. Just before the lip (the takeoff edge), sink slightly into your knees, then extend both legs to pop straight up the instant you reach the lip.

Diving forward drops your head first, so keep your hips stacked right over the board and send your eyes to the air beyond the lip.

  3. Once you've risen to the peak, bend both knees and pull them toward your chest while scooping the board up from underneath you.

Don't drop your hand down to the board, bring the board up to your hand by tucking your knees. Fold at the hips and knees to make your body small.

  4. Reach your trailing hand (rear-foot-side hand) and grab the toe (toes) edge between your front and rear foot (Indy).

At first don't reach too far, aim for the middle of the board so it's easier to reach. Once you have it, round your upper body slightly forward and keep your eyes on the landing zone ahead.

  5. As you start to drop, release the grab and extend your tucked legs downward to bring the board back parallel to the water.

Land on both feet at once. Landing with your hand still on the board strains the wrist, so when in doubt, let go early.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Reach the board by pulling your knees up to bring it closer, not by moving your hand. There's no footing in the air and your arm can't move the board, so closing the gap by tucking your legs is the reliable way.

COMMON MISTAKE

Can't reach the board → your knee tuck is shallow and you're only stretching your hand. Pull both knees to your chest using your core and hips, lifting the board up to hand height.
