How to

Step by step
  1. Practice off a straight jump where you fly straight ahead.

Landing on an airbag means you can reach for the grab without fear of falling.

  2. Approach at a steady speed, just fast enough not to stall, with your eyes on the lip (the edge you launch from).

Keep the board flat and weighted evenly on both feet.

  3. At the lip, push the snow through the balls of both feet (the base of your big toes) and extend your knees to pop lightly straight up.

Send your belly button toward the lip so you don't tip forward.

  4. Right after you leave the lip, use your core to pull both knees up toward your chest first.

Lifting the knees before the hand brings the board close to your body so your hand can reach it.

  5. Drop your trailing hand (right hand for regular) straight down, not across the front of your body, and grab the toe-side edge of the board in front of your back foot (toward the nose), right around between the bindings.

Wrap your fingers under the base.

  6. As you grab, keep your shoulders facing forward and just tilt your hips a little toward the toe side (the grab side) so the trailing hand reaches the board naturally.

Keep your upper body upright and your eyes on where you're heading (the landing).

  7. Hold for a beat, then release, bring your knees back, and set the board flat under your body.

On the airbag you can safely land on your back or seat.

Tips

Indy is the easiest basic grab in snowboarding. Because you raise the knees first to bring the board up, the hand reaches it without straining.

COMMON MISTAKE

You grab the heel side in front of the nose → you're twisting and reaching to the far side of the board → aim only for the back foot's toe side, keep the shoulders square, and just drop the hand.
