How to

Step by step
  1. Approaching the lip, keep the board flat and both knees softly bent (about 40 to 50 degrees each), weight split evenly between the balls of your feet and your heels.

Look past the lip, toward where you want to launch.

  2. At the lip, extend both knees to pop straight up, keeping your upper body squared to your direction of travel.

Don't throw your chest forward here, since that's what prevents going head first.

  3. Once airborne, pull your front knee up toward your chest (bend at the hip, folding the knee past 90 degrees) and lift the nose of the board (the end ahead of your front binding) up to about face height.

Bringing the board to your hand with your leg is the real shortcut, because reaching with the arm alone won't get you there.

  4. At the same time, reach your front hand (left hand for regular, right hand for goofy) to the nose and grab the toe-side edge from above.

Hinge slightly at the hips (around 20 degrees) to close the gap between hand and board.

  5. Once you've grabbed, keep your chest up rather than rounding your back hard, and shift your eyes to the landing.

Grab around the peak or first half of the air and release before the second half.

  6. As you let go, swing the front foot back so the board lines up with your direction of travel, bend both knees, and bring the base down roughly flat while soaking up the landing with both legs.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Your leg does the work, not your arm. Folding the front knee to your chest lifts the nose up to your hand, so you reach it without bending deep at the waist. Deep forward lean is what tips you head first, so keep it minimal.

COMMON MISTAKE

Diving head first → caused by leaning your upper body deep forward to reach with the hand. Lift the nose with your front knee toward your chest instead of the arm, and keep the hip hinge shallow.
