How to
Step by stepOn the approach, keep your knees and ankles softly bent (knees around 30-45 degrees) with your weight split evenly between your front foot and back foot, riding straight so the nose does not wander.
Glance at the lip (the edge of the takeoff), then shift your eyes to the sky just beyond it so your upper body does not pop up too early.
Start slow, then keep a steady speed once you are used to it.
Do not speed up, slow down, or switch edges during the approach. Braking right before the lip throws your body forward while your back foot lags behind, which is exactly what causes backseat landings.
Just before you reach the lip, extend the knees, ankles, and hips you were holding bent, pressing the takeoff straight down through your whole foot (both the ball of the foot and the heel).
Do not pop off only the front foot or only the back foot; extend both legs at the same time to go straight up.
Time the pop right at the tip of the lip.
Too early and you are still pressing into the slope so you get no height; too late and your body gets left behind and you tip forward. As you extend, drive your hips up over the board so you stay level in the air.
Once airborne, let your knees bend back slightly (fold the fully extended legs about 30 degrees) and bring both hands in toward your hips, close to your center.
Moving your arms and legs in the air throws your body off balance from the reaction, so keep them still and compact to hold your posture.
When the landing slope comes into view, match the angle of your board to the angle of that slope.
Keep your eyes a little past the landing point so your head stays up and you do not fall into the backseat.
The instant the whole base of the board touches the snow, bend your knees and ankles deeply (knees down to about 60-70 degrees) to soak up the impact.
Landing on stiff, locked legs bounces the shock straight into your hips and knees, so sink down softly the moment you touch down.
Tips & common mistakes
In the app — learn while you logStart on the smallest kicker you can find. A small jump has little drop, so even if you mistime the pop or the landing the impact on your body is small, which makes it easier to teach the movement to your body.
You get scared at the lip and slow down → you fall short onto the flat knuckle and take a hard hit (the most dangerous case) → hold a steady approach speed all the way to the lip, and if you feel nervous drop to a smaller kicker so you can clear it without braking.
