How to
Step by stepOn the approach, keep both knees softly bent in a low stance and look out to the lip and your landing.
Normal medium speed is plenty.
At the lip, extend both legs straight up to unweight.
Think of standing tall and letting the board come away from your body, rather than kicking the board up — this makes the front hand easier to reach.
Once airborne, pull your back-foot knee up toward your chest (bend it to about 90 degrees) and leave the nose-side front leg fairly extended.
This split — front leg long, back leg tucked — is what makes it a Melancholy.
Open your upper body slightly toward the heel side (rotate your shoulders about 20 degrees) and reach your front hand (left hand for regular) to the heel edge.
Opening up naturally brings your arm closer to the heel edge.
Grab the heel edge between the two bindings.
Aim for the edge just inside the bindings, not the binding hardware itself.
Hold for a beat, release, and bring the opened upper body back toward your direction of travel.
Shifting your gaze to the landing pulls your body square so you ride away straight.
Tips & common mistakes
In the app — learn while you logPull the back-foot knee to your chest before you reach. Once the board is close to your body, the front hand reaches the heel edge without you having to lean your torso over.
The front hand can't reach the heel edge and your whole torso topples to the heel side → caused by reaching with the hand before tucking. Pull the back-foot knee to your chest first, then reach once the board is close.
