How to

Step by step
  1. Drop in at a steady medium speed on a gentle-to-moderate slope, fast enough that you keep flowing without stopping.

Too little speed and your ollie won't give you the air to finish the rotation.

  2. Approach with your skis parallel and together, bending both knees to lower your hips.

At the same time, wind your upper body slightly the opposite way you want to spin to load up some twist. Keep your eyes on the slope ahead.

  3. Start the takeoff by unwinding that twist.

Extend both knees to push off the snow and, at the very same instant, swing your shoulders and arms hard around in the spin direction. Time the leg push and the upper-body swing to fire together.

  4. Once airborne, pull both arms and poles in toward your chest and tuck your knees up to make yourself small.

Your spin speed is set the moment you leave the snow and can't be added in the air, so the more compact you get, the faster you turn for the same effort.

  5. As you lift off, snap both skis parallel and tight together, squeezing your inner thighs so your legs don't split apart.

Because each ski moves independently, legs that spread will slow your spin and let one ski land early, which throws you off.

  6. Around three-quarters of the way around (270 degrees), send your eyes to the landing slope.

Spotting the landing early lets your body naturally catch up to the rotation.

  7. As you finish, open your arms slightly to slow the spin, face forward, and land with both skis parallel.

Start extending your knees just before touchdown, then bend deeply the instant you catch the snow to absorb the impact.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Your spin power is built almost entirely by the upper-body swing at takeoff. You can't add momentum once you're in the air, so focus on loading the wind-up beforehand and timing the unwind.

COMMON MISTAKE

Rotation stalls at 270 degrees and you land sideways → Either not enough takeoff height or a weak upper-body swing. Sink deeper, drive hard off the snow, and unwind your loaded twist all at once to build more spin.
