How to

Step by step
  1. First make sure your nose press (riding over the front of your feet to flex the ski tips down) is solid for at least 5 seconds.

Start by gliding down the fall line on a gentle slope at a slow, steady, non-stopping speed.

  2. On entry, bend both knees slightly and bring your hips over your toes.

Shift your weight onto the balls of your feet, push the front of your boots with your shins, and flex the ski tips down into a nose press. A light, toe-side press is enough; the tails should not lift too much.

  3. Once the press is set, send your face and eyes toward the way you want to spin first.

Your gaze pulls the rotation, and your upper body and shoulders follow. Build the spin with this lead from the head and shoulders rather than throwing your arms.

  4. Using the flexed nose as the pivot, let the tails swing out in a slow arc, pulled around by your leading upper body.

Keep the skis from edging too hard, staying flat to very slightly inside edge so they don't catch and turn smoothly. Keep your knees together and treat both skis as one board.

  5. Around 270 degrees, release the toe pressure to come out of the press and bring your hips back over both feet.

Use the rebound of the tips flattening out to finish the last 90 degrees with your whole body.

  6. As you face down the fall line again, land in a balanced two-footed riding stance, absorb with your knees, and ride away.

Tips

The spin comes from leading the rotation during the press, not from the take-off. Turn your face, then shoulders, then hips in that order so the rotation around the nose picks up momentum smoothly.

COMMON MISTAKE

The skis flatten out mid-spin and the press collapses → your nose press itself is still shaky. Before adding rotation, be able to hold the press for 5 or more seconds on flat to gentle terrain.
