How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the rail at about a 30-degree angle at a steady, controllable medium speed.

You need a touch more speed than a 50-50 because of the spin, but anything you can manage is fine. Learn it frontside (winding toward the front of your body) first, since it keeps the rail in view.

  2. Two or three meters before the rail, bend both knees deeply (close to 90 degrees), keep your upper body facing straight down the run, and pre-wind your shoulders and arms in the opposite direction to the spin.

That stored twist between your upper and lower body acts like a spring that turns you once you pop.

  3. Right beside the rail, plant your pole and pop off the snow with both feet at the same time, then release the wound-up shoulders, arms, and hips all at once in the spin direction.

All of your spinning power is set the instant you pop and can't be added in the air, so pulling your arms and legs in tight makes you rotate faster.

  4. After 270 degrees (three-quarters of a turn) your body sits square across the rail.

As you finish, stop your opening arms and bend both knees to stay small; this brakes the rotation and keeps you from overspinning.

  5. Just before touchdown, set the soles of both feet onto the rail together and lay the skis flat against the rail.

If either edge is tipped up it catches and throws you off, so soften your ankles at the end of the spin to flatten the skis while still in the air.

  6. As you land, keep your weight stacked directly over the rail and look down the rail to your exit.

Sink your hips slightly to slide, then at the end either unwind your arms and hips back to forward or ride straight off, bending both knees to absorb the landing.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Learn it frontside (winding toward the front of your body) first, because the rail comes into view as you finish, making the landing spot easy to spot. Backside (winding behind you) hides the rail until the last moment and is harder.

COMMON MISTAKE

You under-rotate and can't square up to the rail → the pre-takeoff wind-up was too shallow and you lacked spinning power. Bend the knees deeply, wind the shoulders and arms hard the other way, and release them all at once as you pop.
