How to

Step by step
  1. Enter a medium slope at a steady speed, just fast enough not to stall.

540 needs the air time for one and a half rotations, so pick a roller or the lip before a gap as your takeoff to gain height.

  2. Before takeoff, sink low by bending your knees deeply to load power.

At the same time, turn your eyes and upper body early toward the direction you want to spin. Leave your lower body still facing forward and slightly wound up, so that when you pop, that wind-up unwinds and swings the skis around to start the spin.

  3. Extend both legs hard from the crouch and jump straight up.

Throw the shoulders and arms you pre-turned into the spin direction. The spin is set the moment you leave the ground and cannot be added in the air, so commit to spinning it all out on takeoff.

  4. Right after you leave the snow, pull both arms to your chest and tuck your knees to make yourself small.

The tighter you are, the faster you spin for the same effort, giving you room to finish the full rotation and a half.

  5. Keep your eyes hunting for the landing direction (the downhill view you will face switch).

Past 360 degrees, think "half a turn left to land" and keep the shoulders turning to carry the last 180 degrees.

  6. When the switch (backward) landing direction comes into view, open your arms slightly to slow the spin and stop over-rotation.

  7. Land on both feet at once, pressing through the whole sole (around the arch), and bend your knees deep to absorb the impact.

Keep your weight stacked over the switch travel direction and ride away backward.

Tips

Pre-turning your eyes and shoulders before takeoff is what creates the spin. Leaving the lower body wound up adds a snap as it unwinds at the pop, letting you turn more from the same height.

COMMON MISTAKE

Under-rotating and landing sideways around 450 degrees → too little air time, or opening up too early. Gain height from the terrain and keep your arms pulled to your chest until the landing is in sight.
