How to

Step by step
  1. Start on a gentle slope at a slow, steady speed that keeps you rolling.

Look slightly ahead in your direction of travel, not down at your feet.

  2. Bend both knees lightly (about 30-40 degrees) and center your weight over the middle of the board.

Don't lean onto your front foot. Leaning forward digs the nose into the snow before you pop, killing the spring.

  3. Snap your front knee straight while driving down through the ball of your front foot onto the nose.

This loads the board's flex like a spring.

  4. The instant the nose pushes back, kick up off your front foot and pull your upper body straight up at the same time.

If you wait until the flex fully releases you're too late, so kick the moment you feel the board load.

  5. Right after takeoff, pull your weight back from over the nose to the middle of the board.

This stops the forward dive and keeps the board level.

  6. In the air, draw both knees toward your chest, bringing the board up under you and staying compact.

  7. Extend both feet together to land flat on the whole board, and bend both knees on contact to absorb the impact.

    Keep your eyes forward.

Tips

Before popping, keep your weight centered, not over the front foot. Loading the front foot spears the nose into the snow and deadens the spring; centering lets the nose flex freely.

COMMON MISTAKE

Falling forward → weight stays on the front foot after the pop → at takeoff, pull your weight back to the middle of the board and lift your upper body straight up.
