How to

Step by step
  1. Take the approach slightly faster than you would for a Frontside 360 and enter the lip straight on.

A 540 needs one extra half-rotation, so the airtime your speed buys you is the foundation.

  2. About two to three meters before the lip, wind your upper body (chest and shoulders) toward your backside (the heel-edge, back-facing direction).

Wind deeper than for a 360 — bring your trailing shoulder almost under your chin. Keep your eyes looking forward over that wound-up shoulder.

  3. At the lip, extend both knees from a soft bend to pop straight up, and at the same moment release the wound-up upper body toward your frontside (toe-edge side).

Send your leading shoulder first in the direction you want to spin, and let your hips follow. Pop forward-and-up along the slope, keeping your head stacked directly over your spine so you don't tip sideways.

  4. The instant the board leaves the lip, hug both arms in front of your chest and draw both knees up toward your stomach to make yourself small.

The spin force is set the moment you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, so the more compact you get, the faster you rotate on the same momentum.

  5. After passing 360 degrees (where your back first faces the direction of travel), keep your eyes leading the spin for another half turn.

Around 450 degrees — 90 degrees before landing — turn your head first to spot the landing.

  6. At 540 degrees you arrive in a switch stance (riding right-foot-forward).

Reach for the snow with your trailing foot (your left foot on landing), bend both knees to sink and absorb the impact, fix your eyes down the fall line, and ride away switch.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Wind up (step 2) from your chest and shoulders, not your arms. Throwing only your arms tips your axis and mixes in an off-axis spin; coiling the whole torso generates rotation from your center.

COMMON MISTAKE

Rotation stalls near 450 degrees and you fall short of switch → wind-up was shallow, or you stayed spread out instead of tucking → coil the trailing shoulder under your chin in step 2 and pull arms and knees to your center the instant you leave the lip
