How to

Step by step
  1. On a flat, open slope, ride straight with weight even on both feet, a touch faster than your nollie FS180.

The extra speed buys the air time you need to come all the way around.

  2. Just before you pop, wind up.

Keep your eyes down the fall line, close both shoulders and hips slightly toward your front foot (toe-edge side), and coil gently against your spin direction to load it up. Since this is a frontside rotation, you'll unwind by leading with your back from here.

  3. Shift your weight onto your back foot for a beat, then extend your front knee and drive the nose (front of the board) hard into the snow to pop.

At the same instant, snap your loaded shoulders and hips back the frontside way (leading with your back). All your spin is set the moment you leave the ground; you can't add to it in the air, so time the pop and the unwind together.

  4. Once airborne, tuck both knees up toward your chest and pull both hands in near the front of your chest to make your body small.

The tighter you pull your arms and legs in, the faster you spin for the same effort. Send your gaze over your trailing shoulder (the shoulder on your spin side), ahead of the rotation, and find your landing early.

  5. Past 270 degrees, once you spot the landing, slowly open your knees and hands to bleed off spin speed.

Opening up slows the rotation, so this is where you stop yourself from over-rotating. Set both feet down together in your normal stance and ride away in your direction of travel.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Keep your spine and head stacked straight over the slope at the moment of pop so the spin axis runs vertically and you turn cleanly. A tilted axis turns it into a sideways, off-balance rotation that wrecks the landing.

COMMON MISTAKE

Stalling around 270 degrees and landing facing forward → not enough wind-up before the pop, and the shoulder-and-hip snap doesn't fire with the pop → coil firmly in step 2, and in step 3 time the pop and the unwind to the same instant.
