How to

Step by step
  1. Riding regular, keep the board flat (neither tilted onto the toe edge nor the heel edge) and roll straight at a moderate speed.

Look slightly ahead down the fall line.

  2. Just before takeoff, wind only your upper body (shoulder line) about 20 to 30 degrees the opposite way of your intended spin, that is, away from the frontside direction (rotating toward your back).

This loads a spring you'll release in a moment.

  3. Bend your front knee and shift your weight onto the ball of your front foot, loading the nose of the board.

At the same time keep your back leg fairly straight to prepare to lift the tail. Your center of mass sits right over the nose.

  4. Snap the loaded shoulders open toward the frontside while pressing through your front foot to pop off the nose.

Lead with the shoulders so the turn flows shoulders, then hips, then the board. Send your eyes to where you'll spin to (the direction you'll face on landing).

  5. As the nose-pop lifts you, tuck both knees in slightly to stay compact.

Your spin speed is set the instant you leave the snow and can't be added in the air, so making your body smaller lets the same momentum turn you faster.

  6. Past about 90 degrees, spot your landing, then touch down switch (back foot leading) with both feet at once.

Land with deeply bent knees to absorb the impact and set the board flat to stop over-rotation.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Don't over-wind the shoulders before takeoff. 20 to 30 degrees is plenty; the difference between the wind-up and the open is what becomes your spin. Wind up too far and your lower body comes along, making the board wobble.

COMMON MISTAKE

Falls short of 180 and you sit down on landing → not enough pre-takeoff shoulder wind-up and not enough shoulder/eye lead at the pop → wind the shoulders 20 to 30 degrees beforehand, and at the pop look to your finish point and open the shoulders all the way through.
