How to

Step by step
  1. Ride straight down a wide, gentle slope at a slow but steady speed.

Too fast and you can't recover from tipping forward; too slow and the board feels unstable. A brisk-walking pace is easiest to control.

  2. Keep both knees slightly bent and your upper body upright, then shift your center of mass forward until it sits directly over your front foot.

Don't fold forward at the hips. Slide the weight that was on your back foot onto the front foot instead.

  3. Bend your front knee and ankle slightly and press the nose-side of the board through your whole front sole (the line from heel to ball of the foot).

The instant your weight stacks over the front foot, your back foot goes light.

  4. With the back foot now light, stop pressing it and lift it slightly to bring the tail off the snow.

Keep the back leg slightly bent rather than locked straight, resting lightly on the board to limit side-to-side wobble.

  5. Look 7-8 meters ahead in your direction of travel, not at the tail.

Looking close pulls your weight forward into a dive; looking far keeps your torso upright and balanced.

  6. Picture standing on the front leg alone, keeping your head and hips stacked over it, and hold the press as long as you can.

If you lose balance, drop the back foot for a moment to level the board, then reset.

Tips

The pivot point is the front foot only, the nose-side of the board. Concentrate your weight there and the back foot lifts naturally, so you don't have to muscle the tail up.

COMMON MISTAKE

Tipping forward and falling → your weight has gone past the front foot onto the nose tip. Don't sit back. Bring your head and pelvis back over the front foot, lift your gaze, and stand your torso up.
