How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the airmat straight on at a slow, controlled speed, just fast enough not to stall.

Accuracy off the lip matters more than speed, so keep it slow enough to repeat many times.

  2. Just before takeoff, load evenly across the full sole of both feet and sink down by bending the knees to nearly 90 degrees.

Keep your back upright rather than leaning forward, so you can drive straight upward next.

  3. At the lip, extend both legs at once and push the snow straight down through your soles to launch straight up.

The trick is to jump up, not backward, because more air time gives you room to finish the rotation.

  4. As you leave the snow, swing both arms from front to up and then back, lift your chin, and send your gaze to the sky behind you.

The momentum of the arms swinging back and the head dropping back is what starts your body rotating backward.

  5. Once your body faces up and back, pull both knees to your chest and hug your arms in to make yourself compact.

Your spin speed is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, but the smaller you make your body by tucking arms and legs, the faster you rotate on the same momentum.

  6. Around the halfway point you'll see sky straight above, and as you keep turning the airmat comes into view.

When you spot the mat, open out of the tuck and land on a broad surface across your back or seat. Even if you come up short on rotation the airmat absorbs the impact, so don't force a hand down, just take the fall.

Tips

Drive straight up. Falling backward sends your body sliding flat and widens your rotation arc, so you spin slowly and land far away. Bend the knees, then extend straight up.

COMMON MISTAKE

Coming up short and landing on the back or hips → you tucked your knees too late and rotated while open → start drawing the knees and arms in right after takeoff, before the body even faces up and back.
