How to

Step by step
  1. First, make sure you can already do a stable backflip.

The Wildcat also rotates backward, but instead of turning around the axis that runs through your left and right sides, your head travels over an axis that runs front-to-back along the board (from nose to tail). It's a sideways somersault. Get this difference clear in your head before you go.

  2. Approach at a steady speed, just enough not to stall.

Keep the board flat and stack your upper body slightly forward over it. Look out toward the lip's edge.

  3. Just before the lip, sink both knees to about 90 degrees and load the balls of your feet (the pads behind your big toes) to store the pop.

Keep your hips stacked over the board for now — don't lean yet.

  4. At the lip, extend both legs sharply straight up to pop, and at the same moment drive your head down and forward toward the nose side, as if bringing your chest toward the board.

Your upper body starts the rotation first. Unlike a backflip where you arch straight back, the Wildcat dives head-first diagonally forward over the nose.

  5. The amount of spin is set the instant you leave the lip — you can't add more in the air.

So as soon as you're off, pull both knees to your chest and draw your hands in tight. The more compact you make yourself, the faster you rotate on the same amount of spin.

  6. Let your eyes lead the rotation: nose-side slope → sky → your own feet.

Chasing the view with your eyes pulls your body all the way around.

  7. When the air mat comes into your lower view, release your tucked knees and arms, extend your body to brake the spin, and take the landing across your back and rear with a wide surface.

Unlike a snow landing, don't fight to set the board and resist here — give your weight to the mat and let it absorb the impact.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Because the Wildcat rotates around a front-to-back axis, your body sways in one consistent direction rather than the side-to-side axis of a backflip, so the rotation feels steadier. That makes it a good drill for learning to find a flip axis.

COMMON MISTAKE

It comes out like a backflip → You're arching your head straight back at the pop. Drive your head down and forward over the nose, bringing your chest toward the board, and you'll shift onto the front-to-back axis.
