How to

Step by step
  1. Take a gentle approach at an easy, controlled medium speed you could land switch from, knees softly bent (about 30 degrees), weight centered over the board.

    Eyes on the lip ahead.

  2. One step before takeoff, pre-wind only your upper body slightly toward the frontside (left for regular), like winding a rubber band, while your lower body still faces forward.

This stores the energy you will spring back from.

  3. As you extend both legs to pop off the lip, unwind that stored upper body sharply to the backside (clockwise) and pull your trailing right shoulder back behind you.

The whip of the unwind turns your whole body.

  4. Once airborne, look for the airmat over your right shoulder.

In a backside 180 your view briefly goes blind on the back half, so turn your head first and spot the landing with your eyes to keep the rotation flowing.

  5. When the board has swung 180 degrees into switch (back facing the direction of travel), bend your knees and reach down to meet the mat.

Collapse onto it back-first, letting your shoulders, back, then seat settle in sequence, chin tucked and head held up to protect it.

Tips

Pre-winding the upper body the opposite way before takeoff gives you the snap to come back. Just swinging your arms without that wind-up won't open you up to a full 180.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing sideways without finishing the 180 → not enough upper-body wind-up, trying to spin with arm swing alone → pre-wind the upper body to the frontside before the lip and unwind it all at once on takeoff.
