How to

Step by step
  1. Ride onto the box in a 50-50 with even weight over the nose and tail, moving slow enough to stay in control but not stall.

Look toward the end of the box.

  2. Two or three steps before the end, start turning your upper body in the direction you want to spin while keeping your hips and board facing forward.

This wind-up between your upper and lower body stores the energy that drives the spin. Riding regular, for a frontside 180 turn your shoulders and head toward the toe (toes) side; for a backside 180, toward the heel side.

  3. At the edge of the box, press down through your back foot to pop the tail and ollie off with a small lift.

As you pop, release the wind-up in your upper body and let your hips start turning with it. Have your knees bent about 40 to 50 degrees before takeoff so the extension lifts you off.

  4. Once airborne, draw your arms and legs in close.

Your spin speed is set the instant you pop and can't be added to in the air, so the more compact you are, the faster you rotate on the same momentum. Send your head and shoulders ahead toward the landing (straight back from your line of travel) and let your eyes pull the rotation around.

  5. After the half rotation, land switch (riding backward) on both feet at once.

Bend your knees to about 60 to 70 degrees to absorb the impact and ride away switch.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Think of the wind-up as stored twist between your upper and lower body. The longer you turn your shoulders while leaving your hips behind, the more the board snaps around when you release it. Twisting all at once right at the lip is too late and leaves you short.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing sideways and catching an edge → not enough rotation. Caused by too short a wind-up, or failing to release the upper-body twist at the pop. Start turning your shoulders two or three steps before the end and practice unwinding exactly as you pop.
