How to

Step by step
  1. Ride onto the box in a 50-50 and roll along at a slow, steady speed (just fast enough not to stall).

Keep your weight even on both feet, eyes looking past the end of the box, shoulders and hips square to your direction of travel.

  2. As you enter the last third of the box, wind up your upper body against the direction you want to spin to load it.

For a frontside 360 (counter-clockwise seen from above) send your right shoulder back and your left shoulder forward, tucking both arms in the same direction. Keep the board still in the 50-50 for now. When you unwind this coiled upper body at takeoff, the board follows and the spin begins. Wind up too early and the board turns on the box and slides off, so save it for just before the end.

  3. The instant your tail reaches the lip, pop an ollie by extending your knees from about 40-50 degrees, and at the same moment snap your wound-up upper body open in the spin direction (left shoulder driving back and right shoulder forward for a left spin).

Throw your arms the same way to start the rotation quickly. Let your eyes lead, looking toward your landing direction before your body gets there. Use the edge of the box lip to gain height, which buys time to finish the rotation.

  4. Once airborne, tuck your arms across your chest and draw your knees up to make yourself compact.

The spin's momentum is set at the moment you leave the box and can't be added in the air, but the closer you pull your arms and legs to your center, the faster you spin for the same momentum, so this is where you rip the rotation around.

  5. When you have come around and can see your direction of travel (regular stance), shift a little more weight onto your front foot, level the board parallel to the slope, and bend your knees deeply to about 70-80 degrees to absorb the landing.

Spotting the landing back in step 3 makes this much easier to time.

  6. After landing, return to even weight on both feet, lift your eyes back to your direction of travel, and ride away clean.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Start the wind-up only in the last third of the box. Too early and the board turns with you and slides off. Coil the upper body alone against the spin direction and hold the board square in the 50-50 until the very end.

COMMON MISTAKE

You start spinning on the box and slide off → during the wind-up you turned the board along with your upper body → coil only the shoulders and arms and keep the board strictly in the 50-50 until it reaches the end.
