How to

Step by step
  1. Get onto the box in a 50-50 (board pointing straight down the box) or boardslide (board sideways), with your eyes set just past the exit of the box.

Keep your weight centered over the board, biased neither toward the toe (toes) edge nor the heel (heels) edge.

  2. As the exit approaches, wind your arms, shoulders and chest toward the frontside (belly side) first to load up.

Keep the board still and pre-coil only your upper body in the opposite direction. The more you twist against the spin direction now, the harder the board snaps around when you release.

  3. At the end of the box, bend both front and back legs slightly (knees about 40 to 50 degrees) and unweight as you extend up.

At the same time, unwind the upper body you loaded in step 2 sharply toward the backside (back side) and pull the board into that rotation. It is a 270, but almost all of the spin is set at the moment you pop, so open your upper body fully right here.

  4. Once you are unweighted and the board lifts, draw your back leg up slightly to bring the board close to your body.

Staying spread out slows the spin; the more compact you make yourself, the faster you rotate on the same amount of momentum. Look over your trailing shoulder to spot the landing (the snow or run past the box).

  5. After 270 degrees you land switch (back foot leading) relative to your direction of travel.

Just before the board returns flat to the snow, press evenly through both feet and land flat, favoring neither the toe nor heel edge. Bend the knees deeply (60 to 70 degrees) to absorb the impact, then bring your eyes forward (switch direction) and ride away.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Keep the order: wind the upper body frontside first, then release backside at the exit. Trying to lead with the lower body makes the board slide out or stall the spin short at 90 degrees (a boardslide).

COMMON MISTAKE

Rotation stalls at 90 or 180 instead of reaching 270 → upper-body wind-up was too shallow, or you tried to spin in the air after popping → coil the upper body fully frontside before the exit and open it backside at the instant you extend; once airborne, only draw the legs in to stay compact.
