How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the kicker straight on.

Keep both skis parallel at shoulder width, knees softly bent, holding a steady medium speed. Look just beyond the lip (the takeoff edge).

  2. Late in the approach, pre-wind your shoulders and arms about 20 to 30 degrees toward the way you want to spin (backside means sending your back toward the heel side).

Keep your hips and skis still facing forward. Twisting only the upper body first means that when you leave the lip, the lower body chases it back and creates your spinning momentum.

  3. At the lip, extend your knees and ankles all at once to pop straight up.

At the same moment, swing your pre-wound shoulders and arms back toward the heel side. All of your spinning momentum is set in this single instant of takeoff. You cannot add to it once you are airborne, so build it fully before you leave the snow.

  4. As you lift off, draw both arms in front of your chest and pull both knees up toward your body.

The tighter you tuck your arms and legs in, the faster you rotate on the same amount of momentum. You begin turning toward your back, the side that disappears from view first.

  5. Just before passing halfway (180 degrees, fully facing backward), turn your chin toward the spin first and quickly hunt for the landing surface.

On a backside spin the view ahead stays hidden longer, so lead with your neck and aim to catch the landing the instant it appears.

  6. Once you see the landing, open up by releasing your arms and knees.

Spreading out slows the spin, so you can stop the rotation right as you come back to facing forward.

  7. Line both skis up with your direction of travel and land facing forward, weighting evenly from the balls of your feet to your heels.

Bend your knees and hips to absorb the impact deeply, keeping your chest up as you ride away.

Tips

Your spinning momentum is set in the instant of takeoff and cannot be increased in the air. That is why pre-winding the upper body on the approach and unwinding it at the lip to build momentum fully decides whether you complete the spin.

COMMON MISTAKE

Running out of rotation and not completing the spin → The momentum built at takeoff is too small, and you are trying to add to it by swinging your head and shoulders in the air (you cannot add momentum once airborne). Fix: pre-wind your shoulders on the approach and unwind them sharply at the lip so the momentum is fully built before you leave the snow.
