How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the lip straight on from a low stance with both knees softly bent, then extend your ankles and knees to pop straight up.

Keep your hips stacked over the center of both feet as you leave the lip; leaning forward or back sends the board off at an angle.

  2. The instant the board leaves the snow, bend your back knee (right knee for regulars) and pull that heel up toward your seat.

This lifts the tail up and behind you, shortening the distance your hand has to travel. Keep the front foot relatively extended so the board angles back behind you.

  3. At the same time, twist your upper body slightly toward the tail (turn your chest toward your back foot, about 30 degrees).

Reaching with the arm alone jams your shoulder and falls short, so rotate from the sternum to push your reach farther back.

  4. With your back hand (right hand for regulars), grab the tail behind the rear binding.

Catch the edge-side rim of the board, not the flat base, looking back over your shoulder to lock the grip in.

  5. Hold for a beat to show the shape.

Now shift your eyes down to the landing and read how your body is tilted in the air.

  6. As you set up to land, release the grip, untwist your upper body back toward your direction of travel, and lower the back foot you had tucked.

Bring both feet level as you set them down, then bend your knees to absorb the impact.

Tips

The reach comes from the back-foot tuck, not the arm. The more you draw your back heel toward your seat, the closer the tail comes to you, so your hand reaches it without arching your back.

COMMON MISTAKE

Arching back and landing in the backseat → the tail was not lifted, so you arched your spine to bridge a gap your hand could not reach. → Bend the back knee and pull the heel toward your seat to bring the board to you, then grab. Close the distance with your legs, not your back.
