How to

Step by step
  1. Enter close to a straight line on a flat base, biased slightly toward your heel edge, at a moderate speed that keeps you rolling but never out of control.

Keep your knees at about 120 degrees (a light bend) and let your upper body stay relaxed and facing down the hill.

  2. Before you pop, pre-wind only your shoulder line slightly toward the FS direction (your toe side).

Keep your lower body square to the board and twist your upper body the opposite way, loading it like winding up a rubber band. Pelvis stays directly over the board, eyes down the fall line.

  3. As you unweight, release that stored upper-body twist all at once toward the BS direction (your heel side, your blind/back side).

Bend your knees deeper to about 90 degrees to lift the board, and pull your back shoulder (the shoulder on your rear foot side) toward your heel side.

  4. Send your face and eyes first toward the BS direction.

Since your back is blind, turn your chin and look over your shoulder to find where you are about to ride. Once your eyes lead, the rotation follows in order: neck, shoulders, pelvis, then board.

  5. Just before the board finishes its 180, your eyes lock onto the new direction of travel.

Land switch with even pressure on both feet, picturing the whole base of the board meeting the snow at once. Keep your pelvis over the board and your chest up.

Tips

Pre-wind your upper body the opposite way (toward FS) before you pop, then release it as you unweight. The unwinding rebound powers the spin, so you rotate more easily than by muscling it in the air.

COMMON MISTAKE

Rotation stalls around 90 degrees and you land sideways → fear of the blind back side leaves your face stuck facing down the hill, so nothing below the neck turns → on a gentle slope at low speed, practice sending only your face and eyes all the way to the BS direction without even popping.
