How to

Step by step
  1. Start only after you can land a frontside 180 (rotating from forward-facing to riding backward) consistently on the brush mat.

The takeoff and landing feel carry straight over; only the spin direction is reversed.

  2. Glide in at a slow, controlled speed with the whole board laid completely flat on the brush surface.

A backside 180 leads with your heel edge, so even a slight lean onto the heels digs that edge into the bristles and catches. Keep your weight spread evenly across both feet, tipping neither toward the toes nor the heels.

  3. Just before the lip (your takeoff point), bend your knees slightly to load down.

Don't go too deep, just enough to feel like perching on the edge of a chair. Keep your hips facing straight down the line and start sending your gaze toward where your back will turn (the direction your body will face after landing).

  4. Extend those loaded knees straight up to unweight, and at the same moment turn your rear-foot shoulder and hip together toward your back.

Driving from the hips, not just the shoulders, keeps your upper and lower body from twisting apart so they spin with the same momentum. All your spin is set the instant you leave the lip, so don't flail your legs in the air to add more.

  5. In the air, draw both knees up slightly to make your body compact.

The tighter you pull your limbs in, the faster you rotate for the same momentum, making it easier to complete the full 180.

  6. Once you've turned 180 degrees into a switch (reversed) stance, bring your gaze back down the line and land on both feet at once.

Keep the board flat at touchdown and absorb it with softly bent knees like a cushion.

  7. After landing, the brush friction will pitch you forward, so set your weight slightly over your rear foot, lift your chest a little, and hold the stance until you stop.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

The flatter you keep the board at takeoff, the better you avoid catching an edge. On a backside spin the heel edge leads, so even a touch of heel weight digs into the bristles, and that is the number one cause of crashes here.

COMMON MISTAKE

Catching an edge and crashing at takeoff → You stay on your heels into the backside takeoff and the heel edge digs into the bristles → Keep weight even across both feet from the glide through the lip, and pop straight up with the board flat.
