How to

Step by step
  1. Start with a normal frontside spin (for example a frontside 360).

Set a light edge on your back foot's heel (heel edge), bend both knees slightly (a touch more open than 90 degrees), and lead with your eyes and front shoulder in the direction you want to turn so your upper body winds up.

  2. As you pop, push off the snow with both legs for a small hop.

You can't add to the total amount of spin once you're in the air, but a rewind uses the wind-up you built on take-off to reverse direction in the air — so make sure you really build that momentum on entry.

  3. Just before you complete the full rotation (around three-quarters, near 270 degrees), stop your front shoulder and hip sharply.

Feeling like you "load" the rotation here makes the rewind that follows much crisper.

  4. Right after that stop, snap your front shoulder, chin, and front-foot knee back the other way (toward the backside).

The upper body goes first and the lower body (the board) is dragged back after it. Keep your navel facing your original direction of travel so your hips don't lead the way around.

  5. During the rewind, keep your weight centered over both feet, not biased toward the nose (front) or tail (back).

If the axis tips fore or aft the counter-spin unwinds and dies.

  6. Once you've rewound as far as you need (for example a backside 180), fix your eyes on the landing (down the fall line), bend both knees to absorb the impact, and bring the board flat and pointing straight downhill to land.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Don't complete the entry spin — aim to "stop it at eighty percent." If you spin all the way around there's no momentum left to send back, but stopping it loads the spring for the rewind.

COMMON MISTAKE

You can't reverse and just keep drifting in the first spin → you completed the entry rotation and have no momentum left to rewind. Stop the front shoulder just before finishing, and snap back the other way off that stop.
