How to

Step by step
  1. Ride onto the box in a boardslide (board across the box) or lipslide (nose pointed slightly forward).

Note the direction you spun on (for example, frontside on). A pretzel out means you'll spin off the opposite way.

  2. Once you're on the box, bend both knees to about 30-40 degrees, stack your weight directly over the box, and keep the board locked across the box.

Look toward the far end of the box (your exit, the tail side).

  3. With the board still locked sideways, wind only your shoulders and arms the opposite way from how you got on (if you rode on frontside, wind toward the backside).

Keep your hips and board still so the twist loads up across your stomach. Pulling your front-foot-side hand back behind you makes it easier to wind.

  4. As you reach the exit (tail end of the box), unwind that loaded twist and at the same time extend both ankles and knees to pop the board off the box, sending it the opposite way your upper body is facing.

Upper body opens first, lower body follows.

  5. Before the board finishes coming around, shift your eyes to the landing (down the fall line) and keep sending the spin all the way through.

  6. Land with both knees deeply bent, catching the snow with the whole foot from the ball to the heel to absorb the impact.

If you start to over-rotate, push your front-foot-side hand forward to stop the spin.

Tips

Because you're spinning back the way you came, you can't suddenly crank it in the air. Wind your upper body the opposite way while you're still on the box, then release it at the exit and the board follows around on its own. The time you spend loading the twist is what becomes your rotation.

COMMON MISTAKE

You spin the same way you rode on (it turns into a plain spin out) → Usually you're trying to throw the board first at the exit. The board is meant to follow. Wind only your shoulders and arms the opposite way while still on the box, then unwind that twist at the exit, and you'll come off the other way.
