How to

Step by step
  1. Ride straight toward the box at a steady speed, slow enough that you never stall, about the same pace as a flat-ground 360.

Too fast and you will overshoot the box before the spin finishes.

  2. A few meters before takeoff, wind up by turning your upper body against your spin direction.

For a frontside spin, twist both shoulders and hips toward your back foot and curl your front arm across your chest. The unwinding of this coil is what powers the rotation.

  3. Bend both knees to about 90 degrees, pop off the near edge of the box through the balls of your feet, and jump straight up off the nose (front).

Your spin power is set the instant you leave the snow and cannot be added in the air, so release that wound-up coil all at once as you pop. At the same time, look over your shoulder to spot the box, so your head leads the spin and your body follows.

  4. Once airborne, pull both arms in toward your chest and make yourself small.

The tighter you tuck, the faster you spin for the same pop, which lets you complete one full rotation right over the box.

  5. Past the halfway point, get ready to slow the spin.

Just before the board comes back parallel to the box (regular stance), open your tucked arms away from your body to ease off the rotation and line up the stance.

  6. Land 50-50 with the full base of the board flat on the box.

Keep it off both the toe (front) and heel (back) edges and bend both knees to absorb the impact. Any edge left engaged will catch and throw you, so make sure the board is flat just before touchdown.

  7. Hold the 50-50 with your hips centered over the board, slide the rest of the box, and exit straight off the front.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Get both a solid regular 50-50 on the box and a clean flat-ground 360 dialed first. Spinning in the air and dropping onto a narrow box is demanding, and without those foundations your landing will not settle.

COMMON MISTAKE

Coming up short around 270 degrees and landing crooked → Your takeoff wind-up is too weak, or your arms and legs extend in the air and slow the spin. Twist deeper just before takeoff and tuck your arms to your chest to make your body small.
