How to

Step by step
  1. Before hitting the kicker, keep the board flat rather than riding hard on the toe (front) edge, and pop straight up off the lip by pressing evenly through both the front and back feet.

Launching at an angle drifts your body sideways in the air and puts the grab out of reach for your rear hand.

  2. Once airborne, keep your eyes on the slope ahead, then bend your front knee deeply to about 110 degrees and pull the nose (front of the board) up toward your chest.

The closer the board comes to your body, the less distance your rear hand has to travel.

  3. As you reach with your rear hand (right hand for a regular rider), turn your right shoulder and hips about 45 to 50 degrees toward your direction of travel so the arm crosses in front of your body.

Opening from the shoulder first lets you reach much farther than straining with the arm alone.

  4. Grab the toe (front) edge on the nose side of your front binding with your rear hand.

Get your whole palm onto the edge, not just your fingertips, for a more secure hold.

  5. Once you have it, relax your upper body and hold the crossed position for a beat, then shift your eyes to the landing.

Release the rear hand, square your shoulders and hips back to the front, and land on both feet by pressing the front and back foot down together.

Tips

Deeply bending the front knee to lift the nose brings the board to your hand instead of forcing your arm out to the board. Gaining reach through the knee tuck matters more than arm flexibility.

COMMON MISTAKE

The rear hand can't reach the front binding → the knee tuck is too shallow so the board stays far from your body, or you're reaching with the arm alone without turning → bend the front knee to 110 degrees to lift the nose to your chest, and turn the right shoulder and hips first before extending the hand.
