How to

Step by step
  1. Do a few straight vertical bounces first and learn to land in the center of the trampoline without drifting even a board-width sideways.

The spin should happen straight up over one spot, because an angled takeoff sends your landing toward the edge.

  2. As you push off, press the trampoline evenly with the balls of both feet and keep your upper body tall and relaxed.

All of your spinning momentum is created at the instant you leave the mat and cannot be added in the air, so send your shoulders slightly toward the frontside direction (turning to face behind you) right here.

  3. As you rise toward the top of the jump, keep your chin tucked and lead with your eyes toward the frontside direction.

When your face and gaze turn first, your neck, shoulders, and then hips follow in order and the half-rotation starts naturally.

  4. In the air, fold your arms in lightly to make your body compact.

Spread limbs slow the spin; pulling them in lets you turn faster with the same momentum, so you can fine-tune how much you rotate by how open your arms are.

  5. After the half-rotation, when you are facing the opposite way, stop the spin and land on both feet about shoulder-width apart.

At the moment of contact, bend your ankles and knees lightly (knees roughly 30 to 40 degrees) and settle your hips directly over your feet to absorb the impact.

  6. Once comfortable, add reps spinning the other way back to your original front.

Being able to turn both directions builds the lead-with-the-upper-body feel you use on a snowboard.

Tips

Your spinning momentum is set at the instant of takeoff. Flailing your arms in the air will not add to it, so set the intent to send your shoulders before you jump for a smooth start.

COMMON MISTAKE

Landing drifts toward the trampoline edge → caused by kicking off at an angle instead of straight up. Press straight down evenly with the balls of both feet, start the spin only after you leave the mat, and keep the takeoff itself going straight up.
