How to

Step by step
  1. Leave the lip evenly weighted over both feet and pop straight up for height.

You need time in the air to set the shape, so favor hang time over a low, fast launch.

  2. Right off the lip, pull both knees up toward your chest and spread them apart at the same time (bend the knees deep, past roughly 100 degrees).

Tucking small keeps you stable in the air and opens the gap your hand passes through.

  3. Tilt the pelvis back slightly (think of gently rounding your back) and open the legs outward from the hips.

This creates the channel between your legs for the trailing hand.

  4. Pass the trailing hand (right hand for regular) between your legs, turn the wrist, and grab the center of the heel-side edge (between the front and back bindings).

As you grab, keep your eyes on the landing, not on your hand.

  5. Hold the legs-spread, arm-through shape for a beat.

Release just before landing: first pull the trailing hand off the edge and back out from between the legs, then drop the raised knees and bring both feet back under the board.

  6. Land both feet at once and absorb the impact by bending ankles, knees, and hips in sequence.

Keep your eyes down the line past the landing.

Tips

Pulling the knees to your chest right off the lip makes you compact and stable, so spin or drift can't throw you off and you have the spare focus for the tricky job of threading the arm through.

COMMON MISTAKE

The trailing hand won't fit between the legs → you're spreading below the knee while the hips (tops of the thighs) stay closed. Bend the knees and open the legs from the hips at the same time, round the back and tilt the pelvis back to widen the path.
