How to

Step by step
  1. Ride straight in your normal stance (not switch), knees softly bent to about 30 degrees for a stable base.

Keep moderate speed, fast enough not to stall.

  2. To set up, gradually shift weight from your back foot to your front foot until your center is over the ball of the front foot (behind the big toe).

At the same time, let your head, eyes, and shoulders pre-turn slightly toward the backside (your back). Keep your hips facing forward so a slight wind-up (twist) builds between your upper and lower body.

  3. Bend your front knee deeply and press the nose (front of the board) into the snow to flex it.

The point just ahead of your front foot becomes the pivot.

  4. As the flexed nose springs back, drive your front foot straight down to pop.

The instant you pop, unwind the stored twist by snapping your shoulders, hips, and eyes toward the backside, pulling your back shoulder (right shoulder for regular) behind you. All the spin is created at the pop, so commit the unwind here.

  5. In the air, pull your arms and legs in close to stay compact.

The same spin energy turns you faster when you are tucked rather than spread out. Send your eyes ahead in the direction of rotation to spot the landing early.

  6. Once you have turned 180 degrees and can see where you are heading, set the board flat with soft knees and ankles and land switch.

Absorb the impact through your knees.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Wind your upper body toward the backside while keeping your hips forward, so the twist snaps back and spins you the moment you pop. Popping flat-bodied with no wind-up leaves your lower body behind and stalls the spin.

COMMON MISTAKE

Spin stalls around 90 degrees and falls short → the upper-body wind-up before the pop was shallow and the eyes did not lead → pre-turn your head and shoulders firmly to the backside while still riding straight, store the twist, then pop.
