How to

Step by step
  1. Stand at the top of the mogul field and trace the troughs (the line between the bumps) from above to choose your path down.

Keep your eyes 2-3 bumps ahead, not on your feet — looking ahead lets you prepare each move earlier

  2. Set the bases of your skis against the uphill face of the first bump and approach the top at a slow, controlled speed.

Keep your shins lightly pressed into the front of your boots (the tongues) and carry a little extra weight on your front foot to stay forward. Sit back and you won't have time to absorb the next bump

  3. As you ride over the crest, pull both knees up toward your chest and fold deeply (think of bending the knees to nearly 90 degrees).

Sucking the skis up underneath you this way keeps the bump from launching you into the air

  4. As you fold, keep your upper body and hips at the same height as much as possible.

Let your legs work like a vertical suspension that extends and compresses — the less your pelvis bounces up and down, the more stable you are

  5. Once you cross the crest onto the back (downhill) face, slowly extend your folded knees and keep pressing the bases into the snow.

Stretching your legs to fill the trough keeps the skis from floating and holds constant contact with the snow

  6. When your extended legs reach the uphill face of the next bump, tap your pole tip lightly near its crest.

This tap is your cue to fold again and sets the rhythm

  7. Repeat "fold at the crest → extend on the back side → fold at the next crest" without a break, one pole tap per bump.

Keep your upper body facing down the fall line the whole time and move only from the knees down

Tips

The two-beat rhythm of absorbing (folding) and extending is the foundation of mogul skiing. Fold to soak up the hit at the crest, extend in the trough so you never lose snow contact. The faster this vertical motion, the calmer your descent

COMMON MISTAKE

Falling backward and losing control → the bump kicks your hips back and you can't absorb the next one in time. Bring both hands and poles in front of you, press your shins back into the boot tongues, and reload the front foot. Don't sit down
