How to

Step by step
  1. Approach a mogul lip (the top of the bump) or a small kicker straight on, at a steady speed slow enough to stay in control.

Look ahead to where you plan to land, not down at your tips.

  2. Just before takeoff, sink slightly through your knees and ankles, then extend both legs straight up as you cross the lip.

Keep your head traveling almost directly over the takeoff point rather than diving forward. Leaning forward kills your height and makes you drift forward once you open up.

  3. Right after you leave the lip, just before you reach the top, open both arms wide out to the sides at shoulder height.

At the same time spread both skis apart, sending your left foot out to the left and your right foot out to the right to form an X.

  4. As you set the shape, lift your chest slightly, stack your hips upright, and keep your torso tall.

Hold your face toward the direction of travel so your axis stays steady and both sides open evenly. Because each leg moves independently in skiing, match the spread angle and height of both skis so the shape looks symmetrical.

  5. Before you pass the peak and start to drop, pull both skis and arms back to center, directly under your body.

Bring the tips of both skis together and hold your arms in front. If you are late, you risk landing still spread open, so use the moment just before you start falling as your cue to recover.

  6. Land on both feet at once, bending deeply at the knees and ankles to absorb the impact.

On moguls, draw your legs up as you land to follow the shape of the next bump, keeping your torso facing downhill.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Your cue to open is just before the peak, not at it. If the X is already complete at the top, the shape looks its biggest and you have time to recover. Open after you start dropping and you will still be spreading when the ground arrives.

COMMON MISTAKE

The X looks small → you are opening after passing the peak and starting to fall. Open too late and you never finish the spread before landing. Start opening just before the peak so the shape is complete at the top.
