How to

Step by step
  1. Approach a mogul bump or a small kicker at a steady medium speed that you can control.

Just before takeoff, keep your weight even on both feet and bend your knees slightly so the whole base presses into the snow.

  2. At the lip, extend both legs downward at the same time and push off through your whole foot.

If one foot lags, your body tilts, so straighten both ankles, knees, and hips together. More height gives you time to build the pose and recover it.

  3. Right after takeoff, on the way up, swing both legs forward and spread them apart.

Bend at the hips to lift your thighs toward your chest while opening them outward, so both skis trace a V out in front of you. Keep your knees slightly soft, not locked, so the spread skis stay steady.

  4. As your legs rise, fold your upper body forward and reach both hands toward the matching side: right hand to the outside of the right boot, left hand to the left boot (reach toward the tip ahead of the binding if you can).

Fold from the hips, not by rounding your back, so your legs and torso meet in front in a compact V.

  5. Hold the V for a beat at the peak.

Keep your eyes on the landing spot ahead, not down at your feet. Looking down tips your upper body further forward and slows the recovery.

  6. Past the peak, as you start to drop, pull your hands back in, lift your chest, and close your legs to bring the skis parallel and level.

Picture bringing the open legs back underneath your body.

  7. Match the skis to your direction and the slope, and land on your whole foot.

The moment you touch down, bend ankles, knees, and hips together to sink and absorb the impact. To avoid pitching forward, keep your chest up and your hips stacked over your feet.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Spread your legs up and forward rather than straight out to the sides. That keeps the skis in view and within reach. Pure sideways splits jam the hips and make them hard to move, so only the torso folds and you land nose-heavy.

COMMON MISTAKE

Hands don't reach the skis → the torso isn't folding, or only the back is rounding. Bow from the hips and lift the legs up and forward so legs and hands meet in front.
