How to

Step by step
  1. Enter the bump line at a steady medium speed with an even rhythm.

Look two or three bumps ahead, not at the bump you are on, so you can read the next move early.

  2. As your skis touch the uphill face of the bump, start pulling your knees up toward your body rather than pushing your feet into the snow.

Keep a light, continuous rhythm, a little faster than a brisk walk and never slow enough to stall.

  3. At the crest, pull your knees deeply up toward your chest, bending the knees to about 60 to 80 degrees.

Don't wait for the bump to fold your knees for you, meet the crest by tucking your legs yourself. This lets the skis pass underneath you without your upper body being thrown up.

  4. Keep your ankles flexed with the toes drawn toward the shins, and keep your shins lightly pressed against the front of the boots (the tongue).

This stops the ski tips from lifting and lets the skis trace the snow surface.

  5. Keep your upper body tall and quiet, holding your navel at a constant height.

Picture your legs extending and folding while everything above your navel travels along level. Keep your eyes on the bumps ahead.

  6. Once you pass the crest and reach the downhill face, extend the knees you had pulled up and press the skis onto the backside of the bump to keep snow contact.

  7. Repeat fold (absorb) and extend, like marching feet, with no break.

The bigger the bump, the deeper you fold; the smaller it is, the shallower, so you cancel the kick from the crest every time.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Pull the knees up actively rather than letting the bump bend them for you. If you stay passive, the kick from the crest reaches your upper body for an instant, lifts you, and bounces you off line. Folding early lets that kick escape into the knee bend before it ever reaches your torso.

COMMON MISTAKE

Absorption too shallow and the bump bounces you off → You aren't pulling your knees up enough. If the knees stay shallower than about 60 degrees at the crest, the kick reaches your upper body and lifts you. Fix: fold deeply at the crest, knees toward the chest, to about 60 to 80 degrees.
