Ski Short Turn.
ショートターン
小回りの連続ターン
How to
Step by stepOn a moderate-to-steep slope, set both skis parallel and square to the fall line (straight downhill).
Keep your hips and both shoulders facing downhill, and look two to three turns ahead at the line you'll take. Looking too close makes the rhythm bunch up and fall behind.
Trigger each transition by lightly planting your downhill pole on the snow, angled slightly ahead of you.
As you plant, rise up so both skis go flat (edges released) and start the new turn from there. The pole isn't a support post, it's a metronome that sets your rhythm.
Right after rising up, drop both knees quickly toward the downhill side onto the new edges.
Move both legs together at the same angle. Leading with the knees lets the feet grip the snow and switches edges with the smallest possible movement.
Through the heart of the turn, flex both ankles slightly to press your shins into the boot tongues, loading the balls of your feet (just behind the big toes).
The front half of the skis bends, the arc tightens, and the tails sweep out downhill. Don't over-steer the skis sideways here, keep the steering to a quick flick of a narrow wedge.
In the second half of the turn, slowly extend both knees to release the pressure, then go straight into the next pole tap.
Alternating the knee bend-and-extend with the edge swap, one to two seconds per turn left and right, is what creates the rhythm.
Even as your legs swing side to side, keep your hips and shoulders facing the fall line the whole time.
When you anchor the upper body downhill and twist only the lower body, the wind-up wants to spring back and automatically helps you flip into the next turn. That spring-back is the source of a fast rhythm.
Tips & common mistakes
In the app — learn while you logAnchor your upper body downhill and swing only your legs, and the wind-and-unwind springs you into the next transition. Let your arms and shoulders rotate along too and that spring disappears, so you restart every turn from scratch and fall behind.
Inconsistent rhythm → the pole plant and the rise-up are out of sync. Line up plant-and-rise into one beat and count an even tempo in your head as you alternate left and right.
