How to

Step by step
  1. Stand at the top of the mogul field and trace a line that links the front faces of the bumps (the up-slopes facing you) straight down the fall line.

Look two or three bumps ahead, not at the one under your skis, so your path is set before you reach it.

  2. Start slow, just enough to keep moving.

Keep your feet a little narrower than hip width, press your shins lightly into the front of your boots (the tongues), and set your hips over your heels or slightly ahead, in a forward stance. Sit back and you'll accelerate fast and lose the brakes.

  3. As your skis ride up the front of the bump, fold your ankles, knees, and hips all at once to draw your legs up toward your chest.

Absorb the bump pushing up into your legs the way you'd suck up a landing off a jump. This keeps your upper body from popping up and keeps the skis glued to the snow.

  4. At the crest your legs are at their most compressed.

Press lightly onto the balls of your feet and drive the front half of the skis into the front face. When this press bites, the skis dig into the snow and scrub speed. A weak press doesn't scrub, and you accelerate.

  5. Over the back side of the bump (the down-slope away from you), extend the legs you just folded to send the skis down into the trough, keeping them running along the back face.

This compress-then-extend motion is what keeps the skis on the snow all the way to the next bump's front face.

  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 at the next bump.

Pulse compress-then-extend once per bump at the same tempo, shins on the tongues and hips forward throughout. The steadier the rhythm, the more stable your line and the easier your speed is to manage.

Tips

Looking two or three bumps ahead lets you prep the compress-extend a beat early so you're on time. Stare at the bump in front and you fold your legs too late, get bucked, and pop off the snow.

COMMON MISTAKE

Speed runs away → the front-half press on the bump's front face is weak, so nothing scrubs. Run the face straight and load the balls of your feet at the crest to dig the skis into the front slope.
