How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the top of a mogul or the lip of the kicker at a controlled, moderate speed with both skis parallel.

Don't swing the skis side to side beforehand — the straighter your line in, the more stable your launch direction.

  2. At the lip, shift weight from your heels toward the balls of both feet, then sink and extend through your ankles and knees to pop straight up.

Aim to rise vertically rather than throwing yourself forward — the extra hang time gives you room to build the cross.

  3. Right after takeoff, draw both legs up together from the hips and lay one ski (your easier side on top) diagonally over the other to form the cross.

Keep the lower leg slightly forward and stack the upper leg from behind so the tips don't collide and you get a clean X.

  4. At the same time, spread both arms wide out to the sides at shoulder height.

Reaching wide makes your body "broader" and harder to spin in the air, so the crossed shape holds still and clean. Keep your chest aimed slightly up the hill in your direction of travel.

  5. Hold the deepest point of the cross for an instant, with your eyes on a far point straight ahead rather than down at the landing.

Looking down folds your upper body forward — keeping your gaze far out keeps your core stacked and upright.

  6. As you start to drop, reverse the hip motion to pull the upper ski back and open both skis parallel again.

Releasing the cross well before touchdown is the key to a safe landing.

  7. Land with the tips even and absorb the impact by bending your ankles, knees, and hips in sequence.

Landing on your heels throws you backseat, so press flat from the balls of your feet to keep your fore-aft balance.

Tips

Build the cross by laying one ski over the other, not by squeezing your inner thighs to drag them together. Deciding which ski goes on top in advance prevents the tips from catching and tangling.

COMMON MISTAKE

The cross looks shallow → you're trying to cross from the ankles alone instead of lifting the legs from the hips. → Draw both legs up together from the hips and stack the top ski diagonally above the other so the overlap reads deep.
