How to

Step by step
  1. Pick a spot with a bank, halfpipe wall, or built-up lip of snow.

Starting where the surface you plant on rises at an angle is safer than flat ground, because you don't have to lift your whole body to stay supported.

  2. Approach the wall at an angle and ride up the lip on a gentle toe (toe-edge) arc.

Look at the exact spot where you want to plant your hand; spotting it early steers your body toward it.

  3. Just before you reach the lip, bend your front knee and hip to sink, and begin tipping your upper body toward the downhill side.

The trigger is sending your hips (pelvis) from over the board toward your planting side, this is what sets which way you go over.

  4. Plant your downhill hand (the leading hand on a frontside handplant) directly under your shoulder, keeping the elbow softly bent as a cushion.

A fully locked elbow drives the impact into your wrist, so keep it bent about 5 to 15 degrees. Spread your fingers and grip the snow with the whole palm.

  5. The instant the hand lands, swing your board-side legs up toward the sky and pass your hips over your hand.

Don't force a straight line; once your hips rise above your hand the support kicks in. Fix your eyes on the snow between your hands so you don't wobble.

  6. Hold the highest point for a beat, then push off the snow with the planted arm while swinging your legs back toward your direction of travel.

Pushing with the hand and returning the legs at the same time snaps your body back over the board.

  7. Bring the board down nose (front) first and absorb the landing by bending both knees and ankles.

Shift your gaze to the downhill line so you ride straight out of it.

Tips

At first, only go as far as planting and lightly supporting on a wall or bank. The steeper the surface, the less of your body you have to lift, easing the load on your wrist and shoulder.

COMMON MISTAKE

Hand can't reach the snow → not enough rise or tip-over. Usually too little speed up the lip and failing to send the hips toward the planting side. Carry more speed and tip from the pelvis first.
