How to

Step by step
  1. Start on a gentle slope at a slow, steady speed.

Too much speed makes the board skip at the moment you begin the slide, so begin just above walking pace.

  2. Keep both knees softly bent, shift your weight slightly back, and load about 70 percent of your weight onto the back foot to press the tail.

When the nose feels light, you've loaded it correctly.

  3. Keep the board flat on the snow, tilted neither onto the heel edge nor the toe edge.

A bitten edge will catch during the rotation, so press evenly through the whole sole of each foot.

  4. Turn your head first toward your back (the backside direction) and look where you want the board to go.

Spotting the exit lets your shoulders and hips follow naturally.

  5. Wind into the backside in order: gaze, then shoulders, then hips.

Keep your hips stacked directly over the loaded back foot as you turn. If they drift off, the pivot point is lost and you fall.

  6. Pivot the nose around the back foot, sliding the board sideways across your direction of travel.

Stop at about 30 degrees at first, then deepen the angle as you gain control.

  7. As the slide stalls, bring hips and shoulders back to the direction of travel and return your weight to the center of both feet, letting the board run flat again.

Tips

Turning your head and eyes ahead of your shoulders lets your body anticipate the exit, reducing the urge to brake, and links the shoulder, hip, and board rotation smoothly.

COMMON MISTAKE

The board shoots forward at the start and you can't stop → the back-foot load has released and your weight stayed over the nose → re-press the back foot before turning and confirm the nose is light before you wind.
