How to

Step by step
  1. Ride straight down a medium slope at a steady speed, a touch faster than a brisk walk.

If the board stalls mid-spin it will catch and throw you, so keep enough speed to stay gliding throughout.

  2. Before you spin, wind your upper body the opposite way (toward your heel side) about 20 to 30 degrees to load it up.

Turn your chest and belly button back and send your eyes the same way; the bigger this wind-up, the more drive you get when you unwind.

  3. Drop into a nose press: bend your front knee deeply (around 90 to 100 degrees) and move your hips directly over your front foot.

Put about 80 percent of your weight on the ball of your front foot and relax your back foot. This levers the tail up and bends the front of the board, storing the energy that wants to spring back.

  4. At the moment the board is bent the most, snap your wound-up upper body forward in the frontside direction (toward your toes, spinning forward).

Lead with your chest, shoulders, and eyes; your hips and board follow after. Pressing the front foot, the board starts to pivot around the nose.

  5. Once you pass about 90 degrees, gradually shift the weight off your single front-foot point back toward center.

Staying on the front foot alone stalls the board late in the spin, so draw your hips toward the middle of the board as you rotate.

  6. Past about 270 degrees, move your weight onto the heel side of your back foot and press the tail to finish the rotation.

Handing the pivot off from front foot to back foot keeps the momentum alive all the way around.

  7. As you come back to 360 degrees, even out your weight on both feet, bend both knees, and sink down to land in your normal stance.

Keep your eyes on a point far down the slope from the first degree to the last, and your spin axis stays steady.

Tips

Winding up the opposite way first, then unwinding, gives far more drive than just throwing your arms around. Coil your arms and shoulders back, then release them all at once.

COMMON MISTAKE

Stalling around 270 degrees → You stayed on the single front-foot point too long and the board jammed there. → Once you pass 90 degrees, move your hips to center, and at 270 hand the weight off to the heel side of your back foot, switching the lead foot from front to back.
