How to

Step by step
  1. On a gentle to moderate slope, ride straight at a slow, controlled speed with the base of the board kept flat.

Too much speed will throw you forward if the nose catches.

  2. Bend your front knee and shift your weight forward, getting up over the nose (front of the board).

Keep your back leg fairly straight to lift the tail (back of the board) so only the nose presses into the snow. This is your nose press.

  3. Concentrate your weight on the ball of your front foot, right where the nose digs in.

This becomes the pivot point for the spin. The more clearly that pivot sits on one spot, the lighter and cleaner the tail swings around.

  4. Lead with your upper body.

Turn your chest and belly button toward your toe side first, and swing your arms the same way to add rotational drive. Send your eyes ahead to where you are rotating toward, and your body will follow that direction naturally.

  5. Pulled by your body's rotation, the lifted tail sweeps a half-circle around the nose pivot.

Keep pressing the nose with your front foot and keep the tail moving all the way through instead of stalling it halfway.

  6. Once the board has turned a full 180 degrees, release the front-foot pressure and return to even, centered weight to land switch (riding the opposite direction).

The instant you land, look toward the new direction of travel (your former back-foot side) and keep your weight over the middle of the board to ride away.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

First make sure your nose press is stable enough to balance like standing on one leg. If the press wobbles, the pivot never settles and the board flails mid-spin. Drill the nose press alone until you can hold it on the front foot for a few seconds.

COMMON MISTAKE

The nose press collapses and you can't start the spin → caused by too little front-knee bend, so your weight never fully reaches the nose. Bend the front knee more and move your whole upper body directly over the front foot before starting to rotate.
