How to

Step by step
  1. A Tamarack is a flip that rotates forward toward the nose (front of the board).

Where the Wildcat you learned earlier rotates back over the tail, the Tamarack is the reverse: your head drops down and forward. Make sure your Wildcat and your front flip are both solid before trying it.

  2. Take a steady, medium approach speed - quick enough not to stall.

Just before the lip (the take-off edge), keep your weight slightly over your back foot. Loading the back foot lets you drive your weight toward the nose at take-off.

  3. At the lip, press through your front foot as it extends and throw your hips forward all at once.

At the same moment tuck your chin and drop your head down and forward over the nose. Look toward your toes and the snow just beyond them - that sets the forward tumble naturally. The amount of spin is set the instant you leave the lip and can't be added in the air, so commit fully to the forward lean here.

  4. Once you start rotating, pull both knees up to your chest and wrap both arms loosely in front of your body to make yourself compact.

The tighter you tuck, the faster you spin for the same effort. Fold your knees past 90 degrees if you can.

  5. Past the halfway point, when the landing comes into view, slowly open your knees and arms to brake the rotation.

Spreading out slows the spin - use it to stop yourself over-rotating.

  6. Once you've finished the rotation, with both feet pointing straight below you and your torso coming back up, extend your legs and meet the airmat flat through the whole sole of your foot.

Keep your torso upright so you don't pitch forward, and stay slightly bent at the knees to absorb the impact.

Tips

The Tamarack is the forward-rotating partner of the Wildcat. Drilling the two together teaches your body the difference between rotating over the tail and over the nose, so the axis stops feeling random.

COMMON MISTAKE

It turns into a normal front flip → you took off square instead of driving toward the nose. Feel your front foot and nose lead the rotation at the lip, with weight pressed over the front foot.
