How to

Step by step
  1. Start on a gentle to moderate slope, riding at a slow, controlled speed slightly across the fall line.

Too much speed and the board shoots ahead before you can load it.

  2. Shift your weight onto the ball of your front foot toward the toes, straighten your back leg to lift the tail, and ride up onto the nose (nose press).

Bend your front knee to about 60-80 degrees and bring your hips (pelvis) directly over the nose. If your hips stay back, the nose digs into the snow and stops you abruptly.

  3. The moment you press, lead with your head, chest, and eyes turning toward the frontside (the way your chest opens).

Look about a half-rotation ahead and your body will follow. Keep your arms from closing too early and swing them a short, decisive distance at the start to pull your body around.

  4. As the loaded nose springs back, time a light push-and-unweight off the snow with your back leg so it matches that rebound.

When the nose's spring-back and your leading upper-body rotation line up, the snow's resistance drops away and the board breaks loose to spin easily.

  5. Once the board starts turning, tuck your open arms in front of your chest and bend your knees to make your body compact.

Your spin is set before you leave the snow and you cannot add to it afterward, so the tighter you pull in, the faster you rotate on the same momentum and the better you finish the full turn instead of stalling halfway.

  6. In the back half of the rotation, when your eyes catch the exit (your original direction of travel), shift your weight from the nose back toward center, return to a balanced normal stance, set the board flat, and absorb the landing with bent knees.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

Learn it from a nose press (front-foot loaded) as your main version for stability. The spring-back of the loaded nose gives the initial spin, so start turning your eyes ahead before the nose even lifts, and the rebound and rotation arrive together.

COMMON MISTAKE

Rotation stalls at 270 degrees → You tuck too late and stay spread, so the spin drags out. Pull your arms to your chest and bend your knees to get compact the instant you break loose, and the rest comes around.
