How to

Step by step
  1. Keep your approach at a steady, medium speed and come in close to square to the rail.

A pretzel asks you to coil your body while sliding, so too much speed at the entry leaves no time to set the position.

  2. Riding on in a frontside slide (board across the rail, toe side facing where you are heading): the moment you land on the rail, soften both knees, set the board directly over the rail, and load your whole foot evenly.

Keep your lower body (hips and board) at the across-the-rail slide angle (board square to the rail), but turn your upper body (shoulders and face) 20 to 30 degrees ahead toward your direction of travel, building and holding a wind-up between your top and bottom halves. That stored twist is the fuel for the spin out. Riding on in a backside slide is the mirror image: the lead direction of the upper body and the spin you exit with are all reversed (you exit frontside).

  3. While you slide, look just past the end of the rail toward your landing, and resist letting that leading wind-up unwind.

Keep your arms tucked lightly in front of your chest, not spread wide. Spreading them slows the spin that follows.

  4. Near the exit (about one to one and a half board lengths from the end), shift slightly onto your heel side and extend your knees and ankles into an ollie to leave the rail.

At the same time, release the wind-up you were holding and turn shoulders, then hips, then board the opposite way from how you got on. Coming on frontside, the standard exit is 270 degrees backside.

  5. As you start turning, tuck your chin and look for the landing over your turning shoulder, then square the board to it.

Locking your eyes on the landing helps the spin stop there.

  6. As the board comes near parallel with the slope, bend your knees and ankles deeply to absorb the impact, catch the snow with your whole foot, and ride away.

Tips

Coiling the upper body early and holding it is where the spin comes from. Picture winding a spring and pinning it, then letting go at the exit. The longer you keep your shoulders from unwinding, the faster the final rotation.

COMMON MISTAKE

You come off still sideways, short of the rotation → you are not coiling and holding the upper body enough while sliding. Lead the shoulders 20 to 30 degrees ahead on the rail, hold it to the exit, then release all at once.
