How to

Step by step
  1. Approach the rail straight on, just like a 50-50.

Keep your speed slow, only fast enough not to stop, and look at the far end (the exit) of the rail. Too much speed and you will wash out the moment you land sideways.

  2. Just before the rail, release your approach edge and sink down by bending your front knee (the leg toward your direction of travel) to about 60 degrees.

The depth you sink here gives you the power for the twist that follows.

  3. Spring up off that sink and rotate your shoulders and hips 90 to 180 degrees in your direction of travel, swinging the board sideways so it sits roughly perpendicular across the rail.

Lead with your upper body using your arm swing and let the board follow.

  4. Land with the middle of the board directly over the rail, so the nose hangs off one side and the tail off the other, straddling the rail.

Do not bias your weight toward the nose or the tail. Keep the rail directly under the arches of both feet (between the balls and the heels) and hold your hips level right over the rail.

  5. Hold and set the trick for a beat.

Sideways you tip forward and backward easily, so fix your eyes on the horizon and open both arms slightly to the sides for side-to-side balance. Keep both knees bent about 40 degrees and stay quiet, no bobbing up and down.

  6. To exit, sink your knees and spring up just like the entry, twisting your shoulders and hips in your direction of travel to bring the board back parallel with the rail.

Land on the snow at the end of the rail and absorb the impact by bending both knees.

Tips & common mistakes

Tips

The moment you land sideways is the tippiest part, so finish your upper-body twist before you reach the rail. If you try to rotate after landing, you cannot balance mid-turn and you fall.

COMMON MISTAKE

You tip forward or backward the instant you land → the board is still angled to the rail and an edge is catching on it. → Finish the twist before you land, square the board across the rail (perpendicular), then set it straight down on top.
